3D Printers at War Against COVID-19 (LS-PL-326)

The purpose of the lesson

This Learning Scenario is the answer to the situation we are facing nowadays all around the world: the need to fight coronavirus. Being equipped with 3D printers, my students and I decided to act to help the medical staff fighting on the front line.

Development of ICT & STEM competences

The learning scenario is supposed to develop the STEM skills: mathematical introduction to the 3D printing, programming, spatial imagination, saving and sending the program code, checking the program code on the “Repetier_Host” software and sending the correct program to the 3D printer.

Students will expand their knowledge of math, physics, coding and vocabulary related to these topics. All the work related to the printer settings is done by students at their own homes. Consultations with the teacher take place online using LiveWebinar and Messenger.

Project optimization

The model has been optimized in such a way that it is possible to replace the hard-to-reach PVA / PETG board, constituting the front cover, by means of A4 size binding foil. In addition, the printing time has been reduced and the visibility of the face shield has been improved, we use PLA filaments with 25-30% filling for printing. Based on this model, activists and volunteers from Grudziądz and the surrounding area can print parts of face shields for the local hospital.
