Aim of the activity
The lesson was designed to help students in feeling empathy and solidarity: “Migrant children are like us; children with their dreams and their fears “
The students have worked with great attention to the analysis of the language used by media about migrations. They have identified stereotypes and prejudices about migrant children and understood that media language is important in fundamental in the opinion-forming process.
Let’s describe the rights of migrant children
Students appreciated use Europeana for research, they discovered the high number of resources available. They have chosen photographs, images, paintings, letters to be associated with each point of the Convention on the Rights of the Children. Europeana helped the students to reconstruct a piece of human history. Images, photographs were used to give faces and names to migrant children their families and encourages empathy feelings.
At the end of the lesson, students understood reasons that force migrant children to flee their country, and why so many children arrive without parents. They identified these keywords: poverty, hunger, war, long journey, dangers, hope. They also found links with the lives of some classmates, who came from distant countries.
The work done on the Convention, the rewriting of the articles has aroused enthusiasm and interest; group work has enhanced social skills, communication and collaboration; debriefing and discussion developed critical thinking.
All the works were collected in an e-book, including the material used by students to present their activities to school peers. This material will be presented at the meeting with the Italian Authority for Children and Adolescents and to the people at the UNESCO event which closes the school year.
