This learning scenario is related to the United Nations 5th Sustainable Development Goal – Gender equality. The starting point is the previous reading of the play Farsa de Inês Pereira, written in 1523 by the Portuguese playwright Gil Vicente. The play provides an excellent scope to learn about women’s rights and the evolution of women´s roles in society.
Students worked in pairs/ small groups using their smartphones to access resources on the class Padlet. They analyze texts and images about the themes above, took notes, gave real-time feedback using the Mentimeter app. They also presented arguments to support their conclusions, explored personal stories of working man and women in Europe, and they wrote and published a life story of one of the characters of the play, setting him/ her on the XXI century.
These skills provide the framework that lead students to:
- link the characters of the play to real-life people nowadays;
- understand major changes in the role of women in society over the centuries;
- explore Europeana resources, thus fostering European citizenship awareness;
- develop digital literacy.
Critical thinking, debate and creative writing boost students to gather learnings both about the play and gender equality, using a different approach from the ones of other subjects.
Due to school closure, students couldn´t present their stories in class. Peer assessment will be done at distance by using the method “two stars and a wish” on an online class using ZOOM. Teacher assessment will follow the same method. Student´s informal feedback about the lessons was highly positive.
