Fossils (EN-CUR-207) - Teaching With Europeana

The subject belongs to the area of evolution in the curriculum of biology and physiochemical properties of the substances in the curriculum of chemistry for the seventh grade of primary school. This interdisciplinary area also includes arts and crafts where students create models, geography, history and IT tools. The aim of this learning scenario is to encourage students to think about the importance of fossils for life on Earth.

This learning scenario has been developed during the English version of the “Europeana in your classroom: building 21st-century competences with digital cultural heritage” online course. The course aimed to improve teachers’ understanding of cultural heritage in order to efficiently integrate it into their lessons and practices. The courses can be accessed here.

This is a very inspiring learning scenario as its cross curricular aspect encourages the students to link different topics that they learn in different subjects and the learning process takes the shape of a project where every subject strengthens the material of another subject. I believe that with the use of cross curricular teaching, learning takes the form of a great educational experience as one whole.

I must agree with Brendan. This learning scenario is well organized and very inspiring. I really appreciate your project based and students centered approach to this lesson. I really like your learning scenario. I believe in project based learning as it allows pupils to discover new concepts on their own. This learning scenario allows pupils’ curiosities to help them inquire about new aspects and facts. I appreciate how you managed to use a cross-curricular approach linking different topics.
