GeoChem Volcanic Eruption (EN-CUR-182) - Teaching With Europeana

During this lesson, students learn also about volcanoes – how and where they build themselves, parts of the volcano, types of volcanoes, types of eruptions and famous volcanoes. In Chemistry class they learn about ores that build volcanoes. By the end of the lesson, students will be able to label parts of the volcano and recognize the type of a volcano on different photographs and pictures, and they will make a 3D model by using a detailed map. They will also name the ores and get to know the chemical background of volcanic eruptions.

This learning scenario has been developed during the English version of the “Europeana in your classroom: building 21st-century competences with digital cultural heritage” online course. The course aimed to improve teachers’ understanding of cultural heritage in order to efficiently integrate it into their lessons and practices. The courses can be accessed here.

Dear colleagues,
I like the simulation of a volcanic eruption in the classroom. Volcanos are very interstice topics for students. Also, exposing the models of volcanoes at the Science Fair in School is great.

Volcanoes will definitely trigger our pupils to ask questions. It is a topic that always motivates them to learn. I teach younger pupils however when we discuss about volcanoes they are always engaged during the lesson. I really like this learning scenario especially the fact that they will see a simulation of a volcanic eruption! What an interesting activity! Thank you for sharing!

I liked the idea of building a volcano. I used it in the Science Club at school with students in Years7 to 9. Thanks for sharing resources We linked to STEM and watched how an eruption takes place and did a simulation of the reaction using baking soda and vinegar. Our students enjoyed the session very much.

Interesting topic! Children are fascinated by nature and science and this learning scenario provides our pupils with the opportunity to ask questions, investigate, find the necessary answers and reach conclusions. Well done and thank you for sharing.

We are lucky to leave in volcano island (Reunion island) with many eruption each year… so this LS is very interesting for our pupils. Until their first age, they are interested by volcano explanation and all the idea are interesting to link the reality and lesson. Thx.
