Healthy Choices (LS-RO-519)
This interdisciplinary learning scenario refers to healthy eating. It is a two-hour learning scenario, communication and arts. The students, aged between 6 and 7, studied Europeana collections about healthy food, possible snacks.
Students read the story, „The Very Hungry Caterpilla” by Eric Carle, exposing a presentation in pictures. Based on their questions and answers about the text they had read, students found out the text message, information about healthy food, the well-being of the body that led to the transformation of the caterpillar into a butterfly, a child into a healthy adult. Identifying the foods consumed by the main character of the text they concluded that it is healthy to have a program of meals, the combination of foods of the amount consumed.
What is a healthy diet?
We have resumed up the idea of a healthy diet. We have drawn three conclusions together – WHAT you eat is important, HOW MUCH you eat is important, and WHEN you eat is important. They identified their favourite activity (using the Google Jamboard application) in this project and made a collage for it.
The children appreciated the story as interesting, attractive and educational.
In this learning scenario, students are involved in exploring the connections between the keywords of a story, healthy eating, sports, meals during the day, and so on; identifying types of healthy/unhealthy food combinations, drawing educational conclusions; they also created a collage of their favourite activity.
The content of the learning scenario is integrated into the curriculum through reading, writing, questions and answers, the text message – language communication and through different technics for making a collage – visual arts and practical skills.
The results of the Learning scenario (identifying healthy foods, selecting from the proposed ones; creating a healthy eating program, creating healthy combinations, setting hours for meals and quantities; to create a collage for your favourite activity) leads to lifelong learning and is implemented by Project-based learning. This type of learning usually transcends traditional subjects and develops the skills of the 21st century through the content.
It is an interdisciplinary activity that helps students understand that the health of the body and brain depends on the “fuel” we are offering, the combinations we are making and the hours we are choosing to do it.
