How clothes have changed: connecting cultures and eras through the shared heritage of fashion (EN-CUR-611)

This Learning Scenario has been designed to make students reflect on the changes fashion has suffered in the last ten decades. They will be given the opportunity to discover and analyze how certain shared heritage in fashion among cultures has evolved and developed over time. In the activities, they will do research about it and compare it in different decades and they will do a final-task project related to textile branding. They will learn that fashion is about translating self-esteem into a personal style and that clothes have a life cycle that is repeated over time.

This learning scenario has been developed during the “Digital Education with Cultural Heritage” online course. The course aimed to improve teachers’ understanding of cultural heritage in order to efficiently integrate it into their lessons and practices. The courses can be accessed here.

This is an incredibly interesting proposal. I am starting a new unit with my 6th graders this week, concerning the comparison of present and past. I will definitely use this lesson plan and come back with more comments!

The links between fashion and history are always so enlightening: fashion lets us understand history better and in a deeper way and history influences fashion so much. This LS has inspired me with a history lesson, thank you for sharing!

It’s a great LS, with an interesting theme, a well designed process work, and it can help to develop student´s creativity and also to understand change in society.
They can use several digital tools and, by that use, develop digital competences as well.

Dear Remedios,

As an EFL teacher I have been teaching about clothing and fashion for about a decade in my classes referring to any aspect of the subject: fashion through years, repeated patterns within its life cycle, personal style and self –esteem as you mentioned, styles and stereotypes, even cultural heritage tracked in clothing and patterns around Europe.

Obviously I am really interested in your LS about the topic, but what I am really impressed by is the fact that you urge your students make a step forward and be creators themselves. I liked your idea to invite them create clothes brand and logos. Thus students develop entrepreneurship skills apart from presentation and agumentation skills.

Besides I find your rubrics really useful to anyone who wants to assess presentation skills and teaching skills as well.
