Masterpieces of Art (LS-MK-314)
An e-Twinning linked activity
Students will develop different 21st-century skills through project-based, collaborative learning. As part of an eTwinning project: APPic learning, students were trying to learn more about art, music, sports, famous people from Estonia, Poland and Germany, and on that way to empower their knowledge about the culture in these project partners countries.
This learning scenario emphasizes the possibility to research, find information online, evaluate them, make conclusions and present gathered knowledge through different media.
Main idea
The main idea of the learning scenario is to develop student’s ability to search information online about some masterpieces of art, using galleries from Europeana collections, and to use this information further for creating presentations and quizzes. These masterpieces were selected by Ministries of Cultures in the corresponding countries. On this way, students will empower their digital literacy.
Activity details
Collaborative learning is achieved by dividing students in three groups. Each group has a task to search about these highlights of art in one of the participating countries. They use Padlet as a place to share media like images or text among each other. Students search on the links provided by the teacher, read information for some of the paintings. Sometimes they need to search and outside Europeana collections, to critically analyze found information and to make a conclusion in a group. All found information are put on Padlet as a base for creating a presentation on the given topic.
Students communicate, collaborate, and jointly create presentations regarding art in those countries. Additionally, they create quizzes in Kahoot!, using the information on Padlet. Created materials are posted on Padlet, so all the groups can have access to them.
At the end of the activity, each group presents their work in front of the others, students from other groups can ask questions, evaluate presentations and give suggestions for its improvement. Evaluation of the gathered knowledge of all students is achieved by Kahoot! quizzes. Created presentations and quizzes are shared with the other participants on the project’s Twinspace and can be re-used by them.
Outcomes
Implementing this learning scenario as project-based learning is putting students in the center of the process, where the teacher’s role is just to guide them and to enable each student to progress at its own pace. Learning about other countries and using different digital tools make students global citizens of this changing world, motivates and inspires them for life-long learning. The most important is that students are enjoying and have fun during the learning process.
