My town – then and now (EN-CUR-122) - Teaching With Europeana

Through learning about the past image of their town, students can distinguish how the town has been changing through time. Learning about the past of their town they can learn about old customs and lifestyle. Students first get introduced to the old Salona marketplace. Then, they work in groups to create digital postcards.

This learning scenario has been developed during the English version of the “Europeana in your classroom: building 21st-century competences with digital cultural heritage” online course. The course aimed to improve teachers’ understanding of cultural heritage in order to efficiently integrate it into their lessons and practices. The courses can be accessed here.

This is a very interesting learning scenario where P.E., I.T. and creativity meet history through a project-based learning approach. The activities are student-directed and based on real-life experiences. The students had the opportunity to think critically and collaborate while learning by doing. It’s wonderful that you found in the Europeana resources images that belong to the local history. Besides these sources of inspiration, students receive information from their grandparents, from the curator in the Solin museum. During the lesson, the students analyze, investigate, create, vote, debate and do not forget to play.

It is a very good idea that the students are invited to observe, compare and contrast their town now with how it looked in the past. I think that the students will be fully engaged especially by creating digital postcards. This thus requires the students to have prior knowledge about how to use the appropriate tool which can help them do so.

It a very well-structured learning scenario. Pupils are at the centre of their learning and are surely motivated to learn and ask questions. It’s very interesting to see how a town can change over the years. I really like the activity where the pupils worked in groups to create their digital postcards. This will surely developed their collaboration skills.
