Symmetrical ART (LS-ES-218)

In this learning scenario, students will be working with mathematical and arts education concepts such as rotation, translation or symmetries by means of an activity where they will be introduced to tessellation and the work of M. C. Escher. As the final product of the Learning Scenario, students will be creating a tessellation using Art Nouveau resources from Europeana. Additionally, students can create a VR Museum, using CoSpaces where they can upload their scanned tessellation next to the original Europeana resource.

This learning scenario is very well organised and interesting especially for students’ interdisciplinary activities. It is a great idea to make students connect math and art. Activities are described very nicely. Thanks for sharing it!

Hi Rafael,
I like Cospaces to engage my students. When you think of art it is great to have the students immerse in that environment like yours. The students can make their cardboards and use mobiles to be there. Thanks we have VR and AR tools.Also I suppose HP Reveal as AR tool to be fit on your exhibitions.

This is a very interesting learning scenario. I did a similar one last year: The Revival of Patterns and Symmetrical Designs. You can have a look at it as well maybe you’ll get any other idea to further enrich this scenario, maybe by linking other subjects as I have done. I liked the fact that you created the VR Museum, by using CoSpaces where they can upload their scanned tessellation. It’s a a very good and positive way to celebrate and expose the students works.

your LS is great combination of math application in real life situations and using technology. I like how you integrated arts, math and VR Museum. It gave me a great idea to change using CoSpaces with Thinglink.

Your LS will be useful on my art lesson.How much one needs to know maths and apply it in art ? Students will think of symmetry in a new way.They will visualise their knowledge of maths through works of art.Interdisciplinarity for students is a very challenging way of learning. Congratulations on your work !

A captivating and very interesting scenario under the aspect of STEAM teaching. I was not familiar with https://edu.cospaces.io/ and I plan to use it with my students as soon as possible. I report artefacts on Desmos.com to practice tessellation techniques, describing and investigating models related to rigid movements in the plane. In particular, with https://teacher.desmos.com/activitybuilder/custom/5f18e0f7403ce72e85172e09?collections=5e44be054273ab1a7f4e7471&lang=it they develop mathematical concepts in Islamic art

According to our national Ukrainian program in the ninth grade there is such a section of geometry as “Geometric displacements”. Therefore, this learning scenario was useful for me. This was the last lesson in the topic. The students liked it. The children were delighted with the materials of Europeana.

In this learning scenario, students worked with the concepts of mathematics and art education, such as rotation, parallel transfer, symmetry. Students got acquainted with the work of MK Escher. Learn about the Europeana portal. The students created a mosaic using Art Nouveau resources from Europeana.
