WOHAC (LS-ES-753)

WOHAC stands for Women’s History Advent Calendar and an advent calendar is used to count the days of Advent in anticipation of Christmas. This Learning Scenario proposes a great way to develop a Xmas themed activity with your students.

Making use of collaborative work, groups of students are asked to select a relevant key woman from the Europeana Pioneers Exhibition or the Europeana Women’s History Campaign. Students will elaborate based on the info provided in Europeana, mindmaps showcasing the lives and achievements of their selected women.

Not only that, students will also have the opportunity to use an app to voiceover an image of their selected woman sending a Christmas message to the audience proposing a new year’s resolution. What would that woman from the past propose to the present generation as a new year resolution? Let’s give the floor to your students and hear what they think!

This Learning Scenario can be easily adapted to learners of all ages but it is mainly intended for middle and high school students. Though the activity has a strong digital focus, the teacher can opt for adapting it to a more paper-and-scissors type producing physical advent calendars in which case printed images from the studied women will be needed.

Raising awareness of women’s contribution is a transversal item of the curriculum and therefore this activity can be organized in an interdisciplinary way with the participation of several subjects or as a standalone activity from any subject.
