Implementation of ‘Greetings from the Past’ (SOI-GR-67)

Teacher of Information Technology in Primary Education, I implemented this learning by Anita Lasić. I adapted it to my 11 years old students by creating new worksheets in Greek and by choosing postcards from Greece that would be more interesting and familiar to the students.

An unusual last lesson

It was the student’ last lesson of the year. Which is usually a “free” lesson in Information technology (students are free to choose one of the apps or programs we have used during the year to create a final project or just play and have fun). Instead, I implemented the “Greeting from the Past” scenario. A decision that was met with a little bit of disappointment by the students at first… However, in the end, they were very happy!

The students were already familiar with the Europeana environment from previous lessons. Therefore, no time was needed for the presentation of Europeana.

Working in teams

The class had only 12 students and I divided them into 4 teams of 3. A couple of students had minor learning difficulties, however, they actively contributed to their team. Each team got a worksheet and started the activity, after some general instructions and an example of what they should do.

They all managed to finish their worksheet during the 45 minutes of the lesson. In the end, they briefly presented their final worksheets. There wasn’t enough time to do the Kahoot quiz or create a poster.

Teaching outcomes

I think that my educational objectives were reached to a very good extent. I would prefer to be able to extend the lesson for another 45 minutes, allowing us to do the quiz and for the students to create a poster. Mainly, students would be able to explore the -very interesting- Europeana postcards archive.
