Implementation of “Our Healthy Life” (SOI-HR-457)
This learning scenario was implemented in 2 English CLIL lessons (Science and English) with the students aged 11-14. The scenario was implemented on school project day with the topic of healthy food.
INTRODUCTION
At the beginning of the lesson, first I asked students a question and wrote it on the board: How do you understand healthy lifestyle?
Students answered orally. After that, I asked them to think about the importance of healthy food. They brainstormed ideas and wrote them in turns on Wordart application.
ACTIVITY 1
Later on, students did Healthy Eating Quiz for Kids (I showed them questions on the board, they answered them in their notebooks). This activity was made in collaboration with Biology teacher. They watched a video about healthy food and wrote down the answers to the following questions:
1 What is the recommended amount of water to drink each day? 6 glasses a day.
2 How many food groups are there? 5- cereals, fruit, vegetables, meat, dairy products.
3 Which food group should make up about a third of your diet as a prime source of energy?
4 What does protein help your body to do? Help muscles, skin, nails, blood, organs grow.
ACTIVITY 2
After they had read the recipe from the board, (taken from Europeana)
https://classic.europeana.eu/en/item/2059513/data_foodanddrink_efd_LGMA_0364?q=recipes#dcId=1586891256193&p=2 students wrote down the ingredients and the instructions. In the process, they used the key vocabulary: pour, add, mix. Students looked the rest of the new vocabulary up on the Internet via smartphones. 7 min
ACTIVITY 3
Next, in groups of four, they wrote a recipe for a simple healthy dish. Each group wrote the recipe in Canva presentation.
ACTIVITY 4 The next lesson each group presented their recipe.
Assessment
Finally, as a form of assessment, students read their recipes. There will be peer to peer evaluation and teacher evaluation. All students said a comment according to the following criteria: production/design/accuracy of the text written/creativity/collaboration/relevance of the topic/task given.
ADAPTATION OF THE SCENARIO
In the implementation I have made some adaptation. The main target of the lesson was Healthy Food. We didn’t talk about other aspect of healthy living much, we just mentioned them in the introduction and related the importance of healthy food to our well-being. However, we used the ideas from the scenario in introduction, 1st, 2nd and 3rd activity. I also used the idea of assessment, but without using Google Classroom, but a real, offline classroom.
