Implementation of ‘Our Story, Our History After the Immigration’ (SOI-TR-161)
My name is Zehra Güleniş and I teach the English Language to the students aged 14 – 19. One of the top priorities I apply in my teaching is to enable my students to develop empathy and social skills while learning. That is why I chose the learning scenario related to immigration.
About the Implementation
The implementation of the LS “Our Story, Our History after Immigration“ created by Yildiz Erdogmus gave my students the chance to improve their critical thinking skills as well. During the preparation period, I asked them to look at Migration Stories and discuss the current situation of the societies represented. Then, students had to write their own stories on Padlet. They worked in three groups and they just wrote some parts of their stories which we finished in the classroom. We talked about feelings, social and political issues of the times depicted in the stories.
The best part of the lesson was to read many stories and put ourselves into the families’, who had to immigrate and start a new life in a different country, shoes. I witnessed that all of my students enjoyed reading and researching and also writing their own stories which were only imaginary ones.
Enhancing students’ 21st-century skills
During the implementation, students used many digital tools. They also developed their critical thinking and writing skills. Moreover, students analyzed and evaluated the sources of digital cultural items, they asked complex questions, corresponding to the stories they read.
The main outcomes
In short, the students recognized the impact of immigration on societies. Moreover, they understood the effects of migration on individuals and the whole society. They also developed their collaboration and communication skills. Besides, they were familiarized with conscious, responsible and creative use of information and communication technologies.
