Implementation of ‘STEAM in the Water Cycle’ (SOI-MT-146)

This Story of Implementation was implemented with 6-year-olds and was adapted from the Learning Scenario created by Anna Maria Gauci. The aim of this Learning Scenario was to raise awareness about the waste of water and so an extension to my own Learning Scenario which was about Climate Change and Global Warming. Students become more aware of how to contribute to help change the planet they live on.

Introducing the topic

The topic was introduced as a game, a guessing game! Students had to guess the sound of the rain. Then they had to guess how rain affects a normal day from the Europeana video and every student was eager to guess as much as possible. All these guesses led to quite an interesting discussion between the students. Even the paintings and creativity they portrayed during the activity where they had to draw a rainy day on a black paper were quite interesting.

The water cycle

Students were quite intrigued with the question ‘Where does the rain come from?’  No one knew.  Some answers were from the clouds, from the sky etc. They were quite interested in the presentation of the water cycle although the terms Evaporation, Condensation and Precipitation were a bit hard to pronounce and learn. However, the students enjoyed colouring in and discussing in pairs as they do so. Then came the experiment. The students did not only enjoy observing this activity but they were mesmerized by the conclusion. They also participated a lot in the full / half full jugs group work. They did not collect rain since there was no rain at all during that time but activity will be planned when the forecast predicts rain.

Conclusion

From feedback received all students learnt that not wasting water is one of the contribution to decrease Climate Change and Global warming. This Learning Scenario enhances Creativity, Communication and Collaboration of the 21st century skills.
