I implemented the Learning Scenario entitled STEAM in the Water Cycle created by Anna Maria Gauci. The participating students are 2nd graders, they are 9 years old.
This lesson integrated elements of Science, Art, Communication in Romanian and English. Inspired by the Learning Scenario, I set out to convey information in an attractive way to my students about the water cycle. Above all, I wanted to focus on the elements of global citizenship, responsibility towards the environment, protecting the environment, natural resources, and, especially, on water – as one of the elements of life.
To start with, I used the resources from the initial scenario. At the same time, I told the students that through the water circuit in nature our planet offers us an essential lesson on recycling. The water from our planet is the same water dinosaurs drank, also the same water is going to keep life on the Earth.
I used ESA resources. The students demonstrated the understanding of the water circuit in nature and they understood that water can be found in all three of its natural phases: steam, liquid and ice. They learnt about the formation of snowflakes and the fact that each flake is unique. They performed several practical tasks, working individually or as a team.
I adapted the initial Learning Scenario to the basic curriculum because in Mathematics and Science (Environmental Exploration) the students learnt about living environments and the negative influence of people on the environment. For this purpose, I used this resource. About 2/3 of the Earth’s surface is covered with water, hence the Earth appears blue from space. Thus, the students learned that the Earth can be seen as a tiny pale-blue bright dot within deep space.

My students understood the importance of water, and especially the fragility of our planet, and the fact that we, people, must “preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.” (Carl Sagan)
