Implementation of „Take only memories leave only footprints” (SOI-HR-444)
Introduction
Students in the 5th and 6th grades learned about the development of tourism as a service activity, as well as the importance of preserving the environment.
In the activities of this Learning Scenario, the students observed the connection between tourist trips and the behavior of tourists. During the activity, the students connected everything with their own travel experiences, specially about souvenirs. At the end of the activity, we concluded that it is up to us to explore new areas and cultures, but at the same time to preserve them for future generations.
Stages of Implementation
1.Introduction to the topic of the activity, stimulating students’ curiosity
With the help of the Wooclap tool, students answer questions that introduce them to the topic related to the behavior of tourists during their trip.
They think about why tourists visit certain places, countries, cities. Based on the images shown (taken from the website of Pixabay), the students state the challenges and problems that these areas face due to the huge number of tourists. They also answer questions (KWL): What do they know / what do they want to know?
2. Souvenirs in augmented reality and on the Europeana platform
Students searched the Europeana website using several key words related to the topic of the activity (exp.: tourism industry, tourism people, tourist souvenir, etc.). According to the souvenir they brought from their travels, they search examples of souvenirs on the Europeana platform.
Along with the text about the meaning of the souvenirs, the students used the ARTutor application to scan the photos to find new links and pictures about the souvenirs. By scanning individual pictures with the help of the ARTutor, students expand their knowledge about souvenirs, as irresistible charms from travel.
Through discussion in the group, they conclude what should not be a souvenir (exp.: archaeological find, specific food, drink, plants, animals that are not allowed ). On the created template, the students wrote down their answers what does not make a souvenir.
3. Creating posters
With the help of examples from Europeana on the behavior of tourists, students create posters called “Dos and Don’ts” – what can be taken as a souvenir and what should not be taken from the trip, based on a template created in the Canva tool.
They should include images from the Europeana platform in their posters.
4. Presentation of works
The students presented their works to each other. According to the evaluation rubric, they gave each other constructive feedback on the poster presentation.
5. Providing feedback and certifications for students
With the help of the Wooclap tool, students gave feedback on what they learned.
In a new way, and with the use of Dixit game cards, the students gave feedback on the activities. They chose the card that best represents what they learned during the past hours of activity and described why they chose that card.
At the end of the activities, students are given certificates for participation. On the certificates is image of their footprint (in the snow), which students took a few days before.
Learning outcomes
By applying Learning Scenario, students expand their knowledge about the importance of good tourist behavior on trips, while respecting other cultures and spaces. They thought critically about the behavior of tourists, as well as the meaning of souvenirs as travel memories. They connected new knowledge with everyday experiences. By searching the Europeana website, students compared souvenirs from the past with current souvenirs. This helps to understand past events.
Outcomes for the educator
Students developed digital skills by working in certain tools, but also creative skills by making posters and creating stories. In all stages of the activity, students communicated and cooperated with each other. This Learning Scenario encourages students to think critically and to be creative in their work. These are the skills of the 21st century that should be developed and encouraged.
