Implementation of ‘The birds are singing’ (SOI-RO-17)

The learning scenario ‘The birds are singing’ was created by Işıl Gülmez, Europeana Ambassador for Turkey, and implemented by Carmen Alexandra Miricioiu from Romania.

The learning scenario was integrated at natural science, music and movement and ITC optional courses.

An introduction to the surrounding reality

I implemented this project with my students and I received great feedback. They mostly liked the fact that they discovered a lot of information about the surrounding reality.

Discovering singing birds

In order to better achieve the aim of the lesson, students worked in groups and exchanged information about different types of birds.

While using Europeana collection and other applications (Birdie Memory, Layar, Quiver, PhotoGrid, Padlet), students discovered different kinds of birds and sounds, analyzed their characteristics and identified ways to protect the environment.

Students loved to match birds ‘sounds with birds’ images and then to identify each characteristic of them.

Some tips

I added some new applications because it was easier for students to work with. For example, I used Quiver application for 3D augmented reality coloring apps. Then, we printed, colored and had our birds drawing in beautifully hand-animated 3D worlds. I also used PhotoGrid application for making collages of birds photos and then we uploaded them on Layar.

The Learning Scenario includes evaluation, but it would have been easier to apply if the author had included the Kahoot link. The scenario also includes the main steps and activities, but I consider it could have been more detailed.

Finally, for the content evaluation I used the following  quiz:

I found out………………………………………… …………………………………………..

It was good (about doing business) … …………………………………………………

I think (what could be improved) ………………………………….. …………………..

In conclusion

In addition, after each activity, I suggested a debrief discussion what did you have to do? How did you feel? What did you see/hear/find out? What did each experience mean to you? What kind of life situation can you resemble this with? Why?

I really loved how each part of the Learning Scenario was discovered by students during class. Super!
