Implementation

I used this implementation during sociology and psychology classes in the fourth year of secondary school. The class has 9 students aged 16 – 17 year. The students learned about social categorization. This involves a deeper discussion of stereotypes and prejudices. They had already heard about the concepts of stereotypes and prejudices, but they didn’t fully covered it. Through this implementation, they realized which stereotypes and prejudices they have and that this is also hugely present in the society.

Warming up
I adapted the warming up to the young people’s environment. I used a contemporary image to attract and also better retain the students’ attention. I chose the topic of influencers. This introduction lasted 20 minutes.
Discussion about own experiences
I asked about the students’ experiences. What prejudices/stereotypes do they have? What prejudices/stereotypes have they noticed in society? Can prejudice be useful? We had a conversation about that. I did not use the video clip because I thought it was quite difficult for the students. This seemed too abstract for them. This discussion lasted 20 minutes.
Video clip transcription task
The students watched the short video clip and got to work on their own. They looked for an example in which stereotypes/biases were present and made a little play of it. They performed this play for each other and discussed the stereotypes/biases. This activity lasted 60 minutes.
“Think, Feel, Care” thinking routine exercise
The students were asked to step inside the role of the characters pictured in the following Europeana resource: ‘A woman has a crying child’. The students describe the feelings, thoughts and possibilities of worrying from the point of view of the woman/toddler/… First, they wrote down their answers on paper. Then they discussed this in groups of 4 students. This activity lasted 50 minutes.
Don’t put people in boxes
Very enjoyable and informative activity. The students enjoyed this very much. This activity lasted 50 minutes.
Reflection
I asked students their new insights using an exit ticket. The next lesson, I showed the answers using a wordcloud. Then we discussed the new insights from the previous. The reflection lasted 35 minutes.   Crop it/ When images tell a story/ Cross-dressing in the Victorian age: reading activity/ Cross-dressing of the Victorians: a fashion competition/ The pyramid of hate exercise.
I skipped these parts due to lack of time
