Implementation of ‘Vintage VR’ (SOI-HR-51)

I am Marica Jurec, a primary school teacher from Croatia. My students are 9 and 10 years old and they love challenges. Rafael Montero, Europeana Ambassador for Spain, prepared an interdisciplinary project that combines do-it-yourself (DIY) activities, virtual reality, and architecture. It was a great challenge for my students and me because we did not know what VR was and what the stereoscopic images were.

Stereoscopic: what they are and where to find them

We learned about sight and how we can see the world around us. I divided students into pairs. First, every pair solved a quiz about sight. Then, they had to choose 2 stereoscopic images from Europeana, using this link, and describe them. They had to notice that pictures are not the same.

Discovering and using VR glasses for the first time

The next step was to explore stereoscopic images with VR glasses. My students are too young to make their own cardboard VR glasses. So I decided to invite a guest into the class – a librarian. The Library from our town (Vinkovci) has got  VR glasses. It was the first time for me and my students that we got the chance to use them. It was a great surprise.

We looked at our stereoscopic cards and compared what we see with and without VR glasses.

At the end of this activity, we had a virtual walk around our county. We used a program invented by librarians from Vinkovci City Library.
